To understand RX-4291's personal history, one must first know a little bit about Eos Prime. Barely a class M planet, Eos Prime consisted mostly of acidic bogland with few fertile areas for cultivation. Nevertheless, the indigenous inhabitants of Eos Prime developed their civilization, and although they never achieved warp capability, their robotics revolution turned their swampy, barely habitable planet into a lush garden through the use of terraforming and bio-engineering. This was not to last, and eventually the people of Eos Prime became so dependent on their machines that they began to stagnate. It soon became taboo to even be in the physical presence of another person, and slowly, the birth rate began to drop. Even their machines began to be refitted to adhere to this new taboo, being fitted with abstract face plates to reduce the revulsion  of their masters upon seeing a face that looked like theirs.

RX-4291 was assembled during the twilight years of the Eosic civilization, the population had dwindled to a a mere 500, scattered across the planet in the few garden-like areas that were maintained, the rest of the planet returning to swamp, as the Eosics in their decline had lost the ability to maintain their civilization effectively. RX-4291 was originally built and designed as an assistant to one of the last living Eosic Bioengineers, who despite the inevitable, continued to fight to preserve what remained of their civilization. Upon its deathbed, that engineer gave RX-4291 an archive of what Eosic knowledge could be preserved, and a directive to continue to tend the garden until that knowledge could be safely passed on. In 2242, the Eosic race became extinct, and RX-4291 continued to execute its directive in perpetuity.

In 2388, a Federation exploratory mission discovered Eos Prime and immediately dispatched a research team to identify the source of the anomalous cultivation on its otherwise harsh surface. Initial contact did not go well, as what was once Eosic livestock threatened the away team, at least until RX-4291 threw itself at it, physically, causing it to run away. Though at the time it only spoke Eosic, with the help of some data transfer between the two parties, it quickly picked up Federation Standard, relayed its plight, and offered the knowledge of its creators. Once accepted by Starfleet, a secondary protocol activated in its brain, granting it self determination and understandably freaking it out once it realized it was no longer bound to obey orders unless it chose to, a final gift from its creator. The shock of this caused it to temporarily shut down, but not before it decided it wanted to go with the exploratory team and grab a sample of one of the planet's native pitcher plants, to later be classified as Exonepenthes eos.

When RX-4291 reactivated, it found itself aboard a starbase back in the Alpha quadrant,s and for a time remained there, offering its services as a bioengineering device while it decided what it wanted to do with itself. In its off time, it began to browse through everything that was accessible to civilians. Eventually people got tired of referring to it as its formal designation, cause it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, and someone suggested "Magnus" to it as a name after stumbling upon it reading the works of an ancient human scientist. Magnus agreed, though it did not see the point, personally.

Starfleet History

Although now blessed (or cursed) with the ability to shape its own destiny, Magnus' desire to perform the functions for which it was originally designed led it to joining Starfleet to better serve its original directives. The Galaxy, after all is full of potential gardens in which to nurture life.

PERSONALITY

As an Eosic Horticultural Android, Magnus' original programming demanded that it be servile, compliant, and polite, since achieving self-determination, It knows it is now capable of asserting itself should the need arise, however it has significant trouble with that, especially around organic sentients. The Eosic face taboo is still strongly ingrained in its programming, and it will often prefer to operate with its face shield down, sometimes not even looking directly at whoever it is speaking to. (Though it is trying its best). Although fascinated by organics (as they are so  very different from its creators), Magnus has no real desire to attempt to emulate them, after all, why try to pretend to be anything more than what you are? To that end, Magnus sees itself more as a sophisticated piece of equipment rather than a person, much to the annoyance of those who would insist that because it is sentient and self-governing, that it
